Pennyshine cleans up your Mac or PC on the computer itself, without an account, and what it finds there stays there. This policy says what Pennyshine and its website keep, and why. "We" and "us" are Pennyshine, the business that makes it, as in the license agreement.

1. Your files stay on your computer

To find what you can clean, Pennyshine looks through your computer: the caches, logs and other leftovers Smart Scan cleans, the files in your own folders for Duplicates and Large files, how much room each folder takes for the Disk map, your apps and what each keeps in your Library for the Uninstaller, and what opens when you log in, with the helpers apps add, for Startup items. Smart Scan reads your apps' names to say which app each thing it finds is from, Duplicates reads what's inside files to tell copies apart, Large files and the Uninstaller ask Spotlight when each file or app was last opened, and the Uninstaller asks macOS which apps are open, so it leaves those alone. Startup items asks macOS which of what it lists is running.

All of that happens on your computer. What Pennyshine finds is shown in its window and nowhere else: it isn't sent anywhere, it never reaches us, and Pennyshine doesn't keep it once it quits. It moves only what you choose, to the Trash or the Recycle Bin, and switches off only what you choose.

On a Mac, Pennyshine asks you to allow it Full Disk Access, so it can see the caches and app data macOS keeps private, and uses it only to find what you can clean. For an app the system owns, such as one from the App Store, macOS asks for an administrator's password before the Uninstaller can move it; macOS asks for it and checks it, and Pennyshine never sees it. macOS also asks whether Pennyshine may use System Events, which knows the apps that open when you log in, and Pennyshine uses it only to list those for Startup items and to switch off, or on again, the ones you choose. Pennyshine doesn't look at your screen or what you type.

2. What Pennyshine keeps on your computer

Pennyshine keeps these on your computer:

  • The log, which helps track down problems. It notes when Pennyshine starts and its version, its checks for updates and what they found, the trial and the license, though not its key, and anything that goes wrong. When a tool scans or cleans, it notes how many things it found or moved and how much room they took, and where any folder it couldn't look in, file it couldn't move or startup item it couldn't switch is, with why, but nothing else of what's on your computer. Once it's over about 1 MB, Pennyshine starts a new one and keeps only the one before.
  • The free trial: when it started, and the latest time Pennyshine has seen. Pennyshine signs it with an ID that macOS or Windows gives your computer, so it only counts on the computer it started on. The ID isn't kept with it or sent anywhere. It stays when you remove Pennyshine, so installing it again doesn't start the trial again.
  • Your license, once you've entered it in Pennyshine's window: the license key, the email address it was bought with, which the window shows, and when Lemon Squeezy last said it's good. It's signed and kept with the free trial.
  • The login items you switch off in Startup items: each one's name, where it is and whether it opens hidden, so Pennyshine can show it, off, and put it back when you switch it on again. Pennyshine forgets one once it's back on, or gone.
  • What you tell Smart Scan to leave alone: where each thing is and what Smart Scan called it, so it doesn't look there again and can show you what it's leaving alone. Pennyshine forgets one once you tell it to look again.

The log is at ~/Library/Logs/Pennyshine.log on a Mac and %LOCALAPPDATA%\Pennyshine\Pennyshine.log on Windows, the free trial and your license in Pennyshine's folder (~/Library/Application Support/Pennyshine on a Mac, %APPDATA%\Pennyshine on Windows) and where macOS or Windows keeps Pennyshine's settings, and the login items you switch off and what you tell Smart Scan to leave alone in the same folder. None of it leaves your computer unless you send it to us yourself, such as the log when you ask for help, but for your license key, which Pennyshine sends to Lemon Squeezy as section 3 says.

3. What Pennyshine sends over the internet

Pennyshine contacts only two places: our update server, and Lemon Squeezy once you've bought it.

Updates. Pennyshine contacts our update server a minute after it starts and every six hours after that, to check for updates and download them. Each check says which version you have, with a random ID made when Pennyshine was installed, which lets an update go out to some computers before others. Like any website, the server sees your IP address. We don't keep a record of the checks.

Your license. When you enter a license key, Pennyshine sends it to Lemon Squeezy, which sells Pennyshine for us, to activate it on that computer. With it goes only whether it's a Mac or a Windows PC, which labels the activation so that you and we can tell your computers apart, and no other identifying information. After that, about once a day while Pennyshine runs, it asks Lemon Squeezy whether the license is still good, with the key and the activation's ID, and Deactivate sends them to free the activation. Like any website, Lemon Squeezy sees your IP address.

That's all. Pennyshine has no analytics, crash reports, ads or tracking, and the free trial sends nothing, since it's kept on your computer.

4. The website

This website has no analytics, ads or tracking, and sets no cookies of its own. Everything its pages show, fonts included, comes from the site itself.

  • Cloudflare hosts the site, the downloads and the update server for us. Like any host, it sees your IP address and what you ask for, to send it to you and to keep the site safe from attacks. It shows us totals, such as how many visits and downloads there were and from which countries, but not who they were from. Its privacy policy covers the rest.
  • Light or dark. If you pick one with the button at the top, your browser remembers it. It stays in your browser.

5. When you buy Pennyshine

Lemon Squeezy sells Pennyshine for us, as its reseller and merchant of record, so the checkout is Lemon Squeezy's. It collects what it needs to take your payment and charge the right tax, such as your name, email address, billing address and card details, and its privacy policy covers what it does with them. We never see your card details.

Lemon Squeezy shares with us your name, email address and country, what you bought and for how much, and your license key with the computers it's active on. We use them to send you your purchase, answer you, make refunds, turn off a key that's misused (see the license agreement) and keep the records the law asks of a business, and for nothing else unless you agree to it.

6. When you email us

If you email us, we keep your message, your address and anything you send with it, such as your log, to answer you and help with what you asked. We keep them only for as long as we need them for that.

7. How long it's kept

  • We keep emails only for as long as we need them to help you.
  • We keep the record of a purchase for as long as tax and accounting law asks a business to.
  • Cloudflare and Lemon Squeezy keep what they collect for as long as their own policies say.
  • What Pennyshine keeps on your computer stays there until you delete it.

8. Your rights

What Pennyshine keeps on your computer is yours to delete at any time. You can ask us what we have about you, and ask us to correct it, send you a copy or delete it, and we'll answer within a month.

Depending on where you live, such as in the EU or the UK, you may have other rights over your data too, such as to object to how we use it or to complain to your data protection authority. Nothing in this policy takes them away.

9. Changes

We'll post any change to this policy on this page, with its date. Before Pennyshine sends more over the internet than section 3 says, and before the site has analytics of its own, this policy will say what that shares, and with whom.
