License agreement

Last updated 29 October 2026

1. About this agreement

This agreement is between you and Pennyshine, the business that makes the Pennyshine software ("we" or "us"). It covers the Pennyshine apps for Mac and Windows, their updates and their documentation (together, "Pennyshine").

By installing or using Pennyshine, you agree to this agreement. If you don't agree, don't install or use it. If you accept it for a company, you confirm you may bind the company, and "you" means the company.

Pennyshine is licensed to you, not sold. We and our licensors keep every right this agreement doesn't give you.

2. Your license

One license per person. When you buy Pennyshine, you get a license for yourself, for personal or business use. You buy it once, and it doesn't expire. It's yours alone, so don't share it with anyone else.

Mac and Windows. Your license covers both the Mac and the Windows app, so you can use Pennyshine on a Mac, on a Windows computer, or on one of each. It can be active on one Mac and one Windows computer at a time. To move it to another computer, stop using it on the one it replaces.

Businesses. A business needs one license for each person who uses Pennyshine.

Free trial. You may use all of Pennyshine free for 7 days from the first time it starts on a computer, to try it out. After that, it stops scanning and cleaning until you buy it.

We don't promise to keep publishing updates, or that Pennyshine will keep working with any particular version of macOS or Windows (see section 5).

3. What you may not do

Unless the law lets you regardless, or an open-source license in section 4 allows it, you may not:

  1. copy Pennyshine, except to install it as this agreement allows;
  2. get around the free trial or any other limit built into Pennyshine;
  3. reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble Pennyshine;
  4. remove or change any copyright, trademark or license notice in it;
  5. rent, lend, sublicense or redistribute Pennyshine, or offer it as a service to others;
  6. use Pennyshine for anything unlawful.

4. Open-source and third-party software

Pennyshine includes open-source software, such as Python, and parts other companies make, such as Microsoft. Each part comes under its own license, given in full in the THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt file inside the app. Where one of those licenses gives you rights to its part that this agreement would otherwise take away, that license applies to that part.

Microsoft's runtime. The Windows app contains code that Microsoft licenses for use in other programs (the Visual C++ runtime). You may use it only as part of Pennyshine, on Windows. Sections 3, 8, 9 and 10 protect Microsoft and our other suppliers and licensors as they protect us. None of them gives you any warranty, and none of them is liable to you.

5. Updates

Pennyshine checks for updates soon after it starts and every few hours after that. It downloads new versions by itself and installs them the next time it starts. By using Pennyshine, you agree to receive these updates. This agreement covers them, unless an update comes with new terms.

Each new version of Pennyshine is made for the latest major version of macOS and of Windows. We don't give long-term support to any particular version of macOS or Windows. A new version of Pennyshine may not work on older versions of macOS or Windows, and we don't keep publishing versions of Pennyshine for them.

6. What Pennyshine sends over the internet

Pennyshine contacts only our update server, to check for and download updates. Like any website, it sees your IP address and which files Pennyshine asks for.

Pennyshine has no analytics or tracking. Its log stays on your computer unless you send it to us. Our privacy policy says more about what Pennyshine and this website keep.

7. Ending the license

  • You can end this agreement at any time by deleting Pennyshine.
  • It ends by itself if you break it.
  • When it ends, stop using Pennyshine and delete it.
  • Sections 3, 4 and 8 to 14 still apply after it ends.

8. No warranty

Pennyshine is provided "as is" and "as available". As far as the law allows, we and our suppliers and licensors give no warranties or conditions, express or implied. That includes any that it is of satisfactory quality, fit for a particular purpose, or free of errors or interruptions.

Pennyshine shows you what it would clean before it cleans anything, and moves what you choose to the Trash or the Recycle Bin rather than deleting it. Check what you've chosen before you clean it, and before you empty the Trash or the Recycle Bin.

9. Limits on liability

As far as the law allows:

  1. we and our suppliers and licensors aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost data, profits or revenue;
  2. our total liability to you for everything to do with Pennyshine is limited to what you paid for it;
  3. Microsoft and our other suppliers and licensors aren't liable to you at all.

Nothing in this agreement limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for gross negligence, fraud or wilful misconduct, or for anything else the law doesn't let us limit.

10. Export

You may not use or export Pennyshine in breach of any export control or sanctions law that applies to it. That includes using it in an embargoed country, or if those laws bar you.

11. Your rights as a consumer

If you're a consumer, the law where you live may give you rights that this agreement can't take away, such as a repair or refund for faulty digital content. Nothing in this agreement limits them.

12. Disputes

If something goes wrong, email us at [email protected] first, and we'll try to put it right. If you're a consumer, you can also bring a claim where you live when your law allows it.

13. Changes

We may update this agreement for later versions of Pennyshine, and will post each version on this page with its date. A change applies to updates installed after it's posted. It never takes away a license you've already paid for.

14. General and contact

This is the whole agreement between us about Pennyshine. If a court finds part of it unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later. You may transfer this agreement only with our permission. We may transfer it to whoever takes over Pennyshine.
